Modifying Role Plays and Activities for Both Genders and LGBTQ+ Participants
Many of the role-playing scenarios and activities are portrayed from a female point-of-view but can be easily switched to a cisgender male, transgender, or non-binary point-of-view. Role plays and activities can also focus on HIV/STI prevention, pregnancy prevention, contraception use, abstinence, and consent. Use the basic structure of the activities but modify the specific situation to reflect the needs of your participants.
The Importance of Accessible Sex Education for Students with Learning and Intellectual Disabilities
HIPTeens was created to address the negative sexual health outcomes in at-risk adolescent girls and beyond. Recognizing the need for more inclusive sexual health information and evidence-based risk reduction interventions across many populations, it has become increasingly evident that more needed to be done to reach those with learning and intellectual disabilities (ID). Adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities have a higher risk of sexual assault and coercion and are less likely to receive sex education in school. While the incorporation of UDL supplements is a step in the right direction, other considerations need to be addressed throughout the curriculum that is unique to the ID population.
